Duane's Obituary

Duane Clair Wood passed away January 19, 2025, in his home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Duane was born in Winfield, Kansas, to Golda and Clair Wood on March 29, 1932. He was one of five children, with four sisters: Nada Dolloff, Neila Poshek, Lois Clifton and Joy Nafziger. He was the last living sibling.

He attended Winfield Public Schools, graduating in 1950. Duane was an athlete and attended Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship for a short time; then finished his schooling at St. John’s College in Winfield.

Duane married Joann Cole and had three children, Stephen Wood, Laura Amos and David Wood, all of whom are still living. He enjoyed seven grand children and six great grandchildren.

Duane is preceded in death by his former wives Joann K Wood and Jean Barnes-Wood. Jean founded and operated Jean Barnes Books in Oklahoma City for nearly 50 years. Duane is survived by his wife Jane Hughes.

Duane opened and operated D&J Market in Winfield for many years, which was a neighborhood hub affectionately remembered by many. He was a member of the Winfield School Board and an active member of Winfield Baptist Church. Later, he moved to Lawrence, Parsons and Topeka, while working for Superior School Supply. Then he moved to Oklahoma City, where he became a cornerstone of Jean Barnes Books and was active at Western Oak Christian Church.

Upon retiring, Duane shared his smile and his love by baking cakes for any and every occasion, even doctor visits. Had he the inclination, he might well have hosted his own baking show on cable TV. Throughout his life, Duane was comfortable in any room, always open to conversation, always ready with a joyful sense of humor. Of him, it could often be said, “He had a mind like a steel trap.” He rarely forgot a face, a fact — or a phone number. He will be fondly remembered and missed by all who crossed his path.

A memorial service will be held at Western Oaks Christian Church on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 10:00 A.M.
