Frederick's Obituary

Frederick Lynn Wettengel passed this life in peace at home with his family nearby on November 20, 2021.   Fred was born July 20, 1935 in Oklahoma City to Thelma Adele & Arthur Ray Wettengel, of Hinton.  Fred grew up and graduated from Hinton High School in 1954. He was an active member of the school band, playing the trumpet through graduation and in a dance band for 3 years.

In January 1955, he married his first wife of 25 years, Amelia Massey of Geary.  They moved to Norman where Fred was enrolled in OU with the School of Journalism.  Fred purchased and published the Hinton Record Newspaper from his parents where he worked as a child from 1958 - 1963.  He then managed the Transcript Press in Norman from 1963-1980.  Fred & Amelia had two children living in Norman, Kirk Bradley Wettengel born in 1958 and Sabrina Sue Wettengel born in 1960.  Their group of friends enjoyed many pickin’ & singin’ evenings with the “Ya’ll Come Back Saloon” gang.  They are members of St. John’s Episcopal Church.  While in Hinton he was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Kiwanis.  They developed Kiwanis Park which later became Red Rock Canyon State Park.

While enjoying his wooden Owens Cruiser boat at Lake Texoma the summer of 1987 he met and married his second love and wife of 32 years, Carolyn Speck Schnorrenberg. They married on September 2, 1989 and resided in OKC until his passing.  Together they have 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. They include Ellen Schnorrenburg Edwards & husband Bryan, Carol Schnorrenburg Loughmiller and Don Schnorrenburg & wife Lisa, all of Oklahoma City.  Sabrina Wettengel Rice & Kirk Wettengel & wife Christi both reside in Norman.

Fred had his second career with Western Paper Co. (International Paper Co.) in OKC as a salesman until he retired in 1997.  Fred & Carolyn enjoyed attending St. Luke’s United Methodist church, the Builders Sunday School class and a wonderful circle of friends. Their neighborhood recalls Fred trumpeting Taps in the front lawn on Memorial Day during COVID in 2019 at age 85.

Fred was a ¾ Scale Model Airplane enthusiast and a strong member of Torks RC Flying Field and the Baxter Field Flying Club in OKC.  He was an accomplished Cook & Grill/Smoke master. His family all enjoyed his hospitable nature and ability to grill a mean burger or smoke the Thanksgiving turkey.  Fred & Carolyn enjoyed being host ambassadors with Friendship Force International. They kicked up their heels for years and frequently with the “Young Men’s Dance Club” of OKC.

Fred will be remembered and his life celebrated at St. Luke’s UMC in OKC on December 2, 2021 at 2:00 PM with Dave Poteet presiding. His interment will be in the columbarium of St. John’s Episcopal church in Norman, Father James Detrich presiding. The family thanks The Villages of OKC, Traditions Hospice staff, the nurses and loving aides of Bright Star for their care and compassion during our time with his passing.
