John Herbert Sikes, 97, died on April 8, 2024 in Edmond, Oklahoma. He was born on February 26, 1927, to James Herbert and Olympia Sikes in Cordell, Oklahoma. John was a devoted husband to Margaret Joan (Woods) Sikes. They were married on April 9, 1954 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
John was a lifelong member of the church of Christ. He co-captained his track team at Abilene Christian College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1952. He continued his education at Texas Tech earning his master’s degree in chemistry.
John worked as a chemist for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Phillips, Texas. He retired from Phillips Petroleum after 33 years. He continued his career at the Office of Personnel Management and retired in 1997.
John and Joan had four children, Margaret Denton, Daniel Sikes, Becky LaRue, and Judy Sikes.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Klingman Sikes and his brother-in-law James Koehler.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Margaret Joan Sikes; his sister-in-law, Elaine Koehler of Tigard, Oregan; his children: Margaret Denton of Amarillo, Texas, Daniel Sikes and wife Jeannie of Edmond, Oklahoma, Becky LaRue and husband Paul of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Judy Sikes and spouse Wendy McDonald of Bryan, Texas; his grandchildren: John Denton and wife Holly of Austin, Texas, Rachel Nañez and husband Robert of Amarillo, Texas, Kenneth Denton and wife Kim of Amarillo, Texas, Devin LaRue and wife Lindsay LaRue of St. Louis, Missouri, Kimberly Cannon and husband Jonathan of Edmond, Oklahoma, Benjamin Denton and wife Jennifer of Amarillo, Texas, Dean LaRue and wife Bobbi of Tacoma, Washington, Shawn Munyan Sikes and wife Hannah of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Timothy Sikes of Oklahoma City, and Leah Fryslie and husband Micah of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Esperanza, Bobby and Danielle Nañez of Amarillo, Texas, Aubrey and Lucy Denton of Amarillo, Texas, Rhys, Jonah, Imogene and Emmerson LaRue of St. Louis, Missouri, Avery and Grayson LaRue of Tacoma, Washington, Adam and James Denton of Amarillo, Texas, and Coretta Cannon of Edmond, Oklahoma; and a number of nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Demuth Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2024 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas. Services are under the direction of Demuth Funeral Home.
