Lois' Obituary

White (Derry), Lois F, age 100, of Oklahoma City passed peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends. There is no question she experienced a soft landing into the arms of God, to whom she dedicated her life. Born July 3, 1922 in the family home at Orchard, NE to Florence E. Marsh-Bubbs and Edward M. Bubbs. After highschool, she and her best friend bought seats in a new Cadillac going from Detroit to Hollywood to be delivered to the actress Heddy Lamar. Her life just expanded from there.

She went to work in the airplane factories, becoming a “Rosie the Riveter”, then learned to repair tank engines and was later transferred by the War Department to Benicia Arsenal where she loaded “the whole nine yards” of ammo belts. It is there that she met her husband, Pfc. John E. Derry, who was assigned guard duty at the plant. They married on October 2, 1944, and lived happily together until his death on January 18, 1988.

They began farming in Geary, OK in 1946 where they raised their two daughters, Shirley E. Ray and C. Jean Derry. Their home was the center of activity in Geary as Lois was “so much fun” according to the children who were always running in and out of the three-story farmhouse. During those years she was a home-room mother, Blue Birds leader, Camp Fire Leader, Band Booster member, Glee Club Booster, and everything volunteer. One of her favorite sayings was “If you keep moving you can cover a lot of ground” and she certainly did.

After her husband’s death and a period of intense grieving, she realized that she had to begin a new life. She picked up a Singles magazine at a restaurant and found square dancing classes being offered at a local church. Bravely, she picked up the phone to inquire about the classes and her future husband, Gene White, answered the call.

Lois and C. E. “Gene” White were married December 6, 1989. They set up home in Oklahoma City and she gained four stepchildren. Jim White (Sherrill), John White (Peggy), Jeff White and Rebecca White, whom she loved dearly.

Lois loved life and loved people unconditionally. She and Gene lived a wonderful, fun-filled life travelling around the country with friends, square dancing, showing off their beautiful outfits and enjoying each other. They had a special way of communicating, enjoyed laughing and having fun.

She is survived by her children and stepchildren mentioned above and five grandchildren, Jason Ray, John Ray, James Ray, Joe Ray and Jessie Raines; and eight step-grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren. Lois is loved and will be missed by so many.

The family wishes to thank all those who have assisted in her care, especially Stephanie and Susie.
